Kenny Rogers delivered one of the latter with his 1980 masterpiece “Lady” a track that still makes hearts flutter decades later. Rogers first released “Lady” on his compilation album Kenny Rogers’ Greatest Hits in 1980. The song shattered expectations by becoming the first record of the decade to appear on all four of Billboard magazine’s singles charts Hot Country Songs Hot 100 Adult Contemporary and Top Soul Singles. Within two months of its release it claimed the number one spot on the Hot 100 and held that position for six consecutive weeks. Only on the Top Soul Singles chart did it fall short peaking at number 42.
Written by the legendary Lionel Richie the song tells a story of undying devotion. Rogers sings “Lady I’m your knight in shining armor and I love you You have made me what I am and I am yours” These words became a modern poetry for romantics everywhere.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Richie recalled how the collaboration began. He had originally pitched the tune to his own group the Commodores but they turned it down. “I’m not used to pitching songs but I had this song called ‘Baby’” Richie said. He flew to Las Vegas to play it for Rogers who was immediately intrigued. As Richie began playing an out of tune piano in a dressing room Rogers started talking about his new wife Marianne Gordon. “I married a lady a real lady” Rogers told him. “A country boy like me from Houston Texas what I am doing with a lady She has such taste such class such style and she is such a lady Oh by the way what is the name of your song”
“I said ‘Lady’ I am no fool” Richie later joked.
The most astonishing part of the story came next. When Rogers arrived at the recording studio to lay down the track the second verse did not yet exist. “So we are in the studio recording the song and I said ‘Where is the second verse’” Rogers once recalled. “They said ‘Lionel is in the toilet writing it right now’ I go ‘What’ And they said ‘Yeah he cannot write unless he has the pressure to write’”
That bathroom scribble became a timeless lyric a testament to pure creative instinct under fire. The friendship that formed that day lasted the rest of Rogers life and the song remains a hallmark of both artists careers.
