🎶 Neal McCoy Steps Into Grand Ole Opry Circle Through Charley Pride’s Family 🤝

Neal McCoy leaned down and kissed the forehead of Rozene Pride inside the wooden circle at the Grand Ole Opry House on Tuesday night, and the surprise invitation that followed turned a tribute into a family moment that spanned forty years.

On September 22, 2026, the Opry 100 Honors Charley Pride celebration gathered musicians, peers, and loved ones beneath the spotlight that once belonged to the Country Music Hall of Famer who broke barriers across American music.

Dion Pride, Darius Rucker, Tony Jackson, War and Treaty, and the Malpass Brothers brought performances to the evening, while veteran entertainer Neal McCoy stepped onstage to sing three of Charley Pride’s defining classics.

Before the surprise arrived, McCoy spoke with raw honesty about his beginnings and reminded the crowd that Charley Pride had changed the shape of his life.

Without Charley Pride there never would have been a Neal McCoy

Their bond reached back to the early 1980s, when McCoy was an unknown singer cutting grass through hot Texas weekdays just to pay bills.

Pride, already a giant in the genre, noticed McCoy after a local talent contest and offered a life-changing lifeline, opening spots on his weekend tour dates.

Those weekend journeys aboard Pride’s tour bus became McCoy’s true classroom, and backstage lessons about treating a band, respecting an audience, and commanding a stage with relentless work ethic stayed with him for decades.

McCoy later honored that mentorship with his 2013 tribute album Pride, a record dedicated to Charley Pride and shaped by gratitude and memory.

After longtime Opry member Pam Tillis performed, the room shifted from celebration to reverence as she introduced Charley’s widow, Rozene Pride.

Rozene, who shared sixty-four years of marriage with the country icon until his passing in late 2020, asked McCoy to take her arm and escort her center stage.

As she reflected on Charley, Rozene quietly said that he would be happy with what was about to happen.

Tillis then stepped forward and delivered the official invitation on behalf of Rozene, Charley Pride, and the entire Opry family, asking Neal McCoy to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

For a performer known across the country for boundless kinetic energy, McCoy stood near-speechless, leaning close to the woman who had carried Charley’s story beside him for sixty-four years.

The circle closed with emotion as the family of the man who believed in McCoy first extended the honor to him, turning a formal invitation into a deeply personal reunion.
